Weaver
City: Thimphu
Karma, 30 years old, is originally from Samdrupjongkhar (a remote village in eastern Bhutan) but has lived in the capital, Thimphu, for more than 12 years now. She has been weaving since she was 15 years old.
She lives with her husband and her 2 daughters. Her husband works in the Supreme High Court and earns an income of Nu.24,000 ($293 USD) per month which she says is not enough to support the family. She has many dependents to support which causes financial problems for her family.
She came to know about SABAH Bhutan through a friend and thought it would help with financial expenses and could use her weaving skills.
Now, she has been with the organization for almost a year and she says that her life has improved a lot since she joined. She earns Nu.8000 ($98 USD) per month, which she spends on her child’s education and household chores. One of the major changes in her life is that now she has a consistent monthly income so she can make financial plans for her family.
